Just came across this linked from Inside Bikes.

The UK's Transport Research Lab are researching new roundabout designs to improve safety for vulnerable road users (eg. pedestrians, cyclists and bikers). They are currently looking at designs based on roundabouts used in the Netherlands. You can find out more about this here with a link to the TRL site if you fancy getting involved.

Not sure about the separate lane. More for people to look for, since there's guna be bikes overtaking cars on outside and coming off same junction going into the same space on the road cars want to get in. Too complicated

Saw this a while back and my opinion is that most drivers won't be able to comprehend or understand the things. It think it's a bit too complex, and most cyclists seem to refuse to use specially designated areas created for them anyway.

Apparently, this sort of roundabout is taking off in The Netherlands, but I haven't heard anything about how it's been received.

They invited my in last week, but only gave me 2 days notice and already had commitments. They said there will be further trials, so if I make it onto one, I'll report back (hopefully with some video footage)...

As for complexity causing problems, that's what people keep saying about the Magic Roundabout in Swindon, however the reality there is that it forces people to slow down and accident rates are very low there, so complexity could be a good thing. We'll see...

It will be interesting to see what happens with this. And it amazes me someone came up with surrounding a roundabout with other roundabouts, and then other people approving it :P
