Keep The Schedule Or Keep The Quality?

Wanderer...
Wanted to get some thoughts on this. Right now my upload schedule is every Monday. And I've been doing pretty well at keeping it.

However, this past weekend I intended to film and edit a bike review, and long story short didn't go as planned. There were lots of setbacks. Which then left me Sunday evening trying to come up with something else. I have several other vloggs filmed but I knew they were going to take a lot more time to edit and release.

So now I'm left trying to decide between is it better just to release something? Or is it better to chock this up as lesson learned and release it next week? I tend to think quality, however, from almost all the youtubers who are successful at this they all say consistent content is one of the big things that helped them get where they are.

So now I'm curious what are your thoughts? Schedule or quality?

I think you can keep both. If your viewers expect a video on Monday and you can't make it for whatever reason, I think it's acceptable to put up a quick video saying that you won't have a full video up on Monday and that videos will resume next week.

If they follow your social media then that's a perfect place to put out a notice if you can't make the weekly video. I'm steady at posting a video a week. I've been able to do this by filming multiple videos when I'm out riding and just having them waiting in case I just can't get out and make a video for awhile. I have 4 videos that are my "Back up" videos, they are all edited with thumbnails created just sitting there. If you want to keep a schedule, having back up videos isn't a bad way to prepare.

Putting out a blast on twitter is a good point. I hadn't seen any point in twitter until I started motovlogging so I'm still catching up with learning how and when to use it.

My goal is exactly what you have stated here. And I do have a bunch of footage stockpiled. Right now I'm just waiting to find time to do some bulk editing. This past weekend Murphy had my number and I just had too many technical and physical problems to get a video out.

Advise to keep some of the extra/unused clips from previous so you can whip something up in case you don't have anything to post up.

If you have committed to a schedule, you should try to notify your viewers if you are unable to post for the day/week.

If you have not committed to any schedule, just take your time and get your video done, you can always post it up when it's ready.

I'm not a fan of schedules, I don't see the point in making myself commit to a deadline when I'm doing it for fun. But if you see my postings they appear to be released on fixed days, that's only because I have excess footage which I can afford to release them in advance on a scheduled manner. I have not made any mention committing to any fixed schedule so I'm basically free to post any day I feel like doing so. Freedom.

:)

Here's what I do. Hopefully it might help.
I release a video at least every week. Sometimes two per week. But I am not strict to the exact day.

I usually try to upload on a Friday, but if I don't get it done by then and I start to feel rushed, then I leave it for a Sunday night release instead, or even Monday. Some weeks there may be 9 days instead of 7 between releases, other weeks, there might be 5. It's still regular content.

So, I am still putting out regular content in order to keep my subscribers happy and to keep myself in the spotlight so to speak, but I'm not putting that pressure of a specific deadline on myself as I know that life gets in the way sometimes.

I have a whole bunch of small clips that I have archived, however for me at least, I find editing those short clips into something worthwhile takes more time to edit than if I have a specific topic. Also these clips are also how I plan to get through the winter months when the grass is covered with 3' of snow. :)

I think this makes a lot of sense, especially for where I'm at with my channel right now.

Personally, I've committed to uploading twice per week, although I've only just completed my first week of this, if I'm able to collect enough good quality footage in one ride out, I will split it and use for both uploads. That being said I tend to be out on the bike most days so if I don't get a sufficient amount, there's always more opportunities. Quality along with consistency has to be the way forward!

I follow a blogger that writes up a page or two every 6 weeks to 2 months. He's great. Do I wish he'd commit a bit more time to it....yeah. But I don't expect him to. He's not a dancing monkey for my enjoyment. Unfortunately I think vloggers (especially the popular ones) are expected to be dancing monkeys entertaining the masses, and that idea makes me sad and a little angry.

Twice a week is very ambitious. I started out pretty strong too. However, with a new job and a move I was finding I was stressing trying to get videos uploaded. Now I'm working on once every 7-10 days and doing it when I can and am motivated to. I have 12 subs right now, It's like like I have a mass of adoring fans that I need to worry about. LOL

Yeah I think this applies to many popular people on youtube. And I don't get it, most are normal people with 9-5's. Everyone needs a break now and then.

haha! 12 is a great start man! Double figures is definitely the first milestone for me. Currently working out ways to actively promote my youtube channel whilst also protecting my identity because my preference is keeping myself anonymous, at least for the time being. The promotion aspect is proving difficult!

I hear ya. Promotion is difficult at best. I've been promoting my videos here, instagram, reddit, and twitter. And really it's only been marginally effective. Here has definitely been the best and I've received some good feedback. So I'm planning on sticking around.

Good luck to you!

Hi, noob here.

Question. Why promotion? Are you uploading for enjoyment... or for financial reasons?
Might be a bit of an idiot question... just wanted to know.
What's "marginally effective"? I'm 100% new to this.

I've got an instagram dedicated to my motovlogging, I've also posted on Reddit. This website I must say has been very insightful and there's a great sense of community, however I've not really seen any feedback which I was hoping for, but all in good time!
Thanks for the luck, all the same to you bud!
