Is youtube retarded?

Generally I like youtube, but I have one major problem with it! Let me explain.

I'm generally quite a private guy, but for some strange reason I have a desire to ride a motorcycle and share the stupid thoughts that go through my head while I do it. So here's my dilemma... I do want to get back to motovlogging and do want to share the videos that I've already made. I just don't want to make them generally available to all of the public without me being sure I'm happy with the people that see them.

For me, the subscriptions platform is perfect - I can see who has subscribed to my channel and decide if I want them to see what I post or not. Here's the difficulty - I can't limit Youtube videos to only those that have subscribed. I either have to make the videos private and post them on a website like here, which hardly anyone will notice or I don't post at all. I've chosen the latter of the two options for the last 9 months or so, but I'd really like to be able to make all videos available to those that have taken their time and chosen to subscribe.

So - is youtube being stupid, or am I?

Cheers and much love,
Yarek.

Sorry, but IMHO you are, what difference does seeing the username of the people watching your stuff make? If you want to know exactly who is seeing it, put it on a site like facebook.

That's the reality of the situation, I hope you do start making content again, I enjoyed your uploads!

Aye, I know what you're saying Curly - only problem is there's a few people I know who have found my Youtube channel and I don't particularly want them seeing my vlogs.

I think Curly's on it, maybe leave the vids unlisted and post to facebook and/or here. It would be good to have an option though to post only to subscribers.

*EDIT*
I know what you mean about people you know finding out about your channel. I showed one person at work a video of mine an now like 8 people from work constantly check in on my channel. It's mostly positive feed back though....mostly

This issue doesn't seem to be about YouTube at all, it's about YOU being insecure about making videos and how it might affect your real life social situations.

You're posting your videos for the whole world to see, eventually you might know or run into some of those people, you can't be constantly worried about negative shit they might think or say. If you fear you may talk shit about a person who could affect your job and it might get seen by them, then make it a point NOT to talk shit about that person. By all means learn to have a thick skin and take any form of joking or poking fun as constructive criticism, take mental note of things you can work on to make your videos better and possibly less embarassing for you.

Review your videos, be critical and spot those areas which might not be recieved well by your audience before they do. You have the power to edit and manipulate the footage before anyone else sees it. If you review the video and think it's not so good, other people will likely feel the same way. Just because you spent some time filming and narrating doesn't mean you HAVE to use it in your video.

When I started I made a llist of things I wanted to avoid talking about and things I might do that I need to avoid (e.i.: heavy breathing, nose sniffing, saying "uh" too much, chewing gum, rambling on). If you make a list, stick to it, never change a recipe that is working adjust it in small steps to make it better. A valuable source of information is the comments, read them all even if they are negative, learn from them.

I don't have a huge subscriber base, but I see it as a challenge to make better content, an opportunity to work on my skills and make really good content before I expose all my flaws to a massive crowd of subs. The better you get, the more popular you'll be.

I see what you're saying but then I'm not sure how you get subscribers without the videos being open to the public. However it might make sense for youtube to have an option for videos only to be visible to subscribers only; 'bonus' content for them almost. Maybe suggest it to them!

If I may be so bold...

You shouldn't post ANYTHING online that you aren't willing to let the whole world see. You might set it as private, but the content is on YouTube, glitches can happen, people can fraudulently access it, heck a friend may show one of THEIR friends.

I understand being self-concious, and I'm not gonna knock you on that. That's your own personal thing and it's none of my business. But, for your sake, I would decide whether or not you want to post public videos, or not. Rather than be like so many other people who have a false sense of security, whether with FaceBook or YouTube or otherwise, because they set it to 'private'.

Believe it or not, some of YouTubes most popular videos (like Charlie bit my finger) were never intended to reach an audience larger than a few people. Some of the original uploaders had originally intended to set it to private but somehow failed to do so, or YouTube screwed up. Then, they went Viral. Point is, if it's posted online, plan on the whole world seeing it. If you plan accordingly, you'll never be concerned if the wrong people see it. If you don't think the whole world should see it, it doesn't belong online. Just e-mail it to your friends (even then, who knows who they'll share it with?) or keep it for your own review. The only way to control who views your content is to possess the only copy and physically show it to people in your presence and check for recording devices before you do!

That's just my opinion, take it or leave it. There's no need to be self-concious, but if you are, I'm not gonna sit here and knock you for it. I'd just hate for you to have a false belief that just because you set a video to private, or were able to do a subscriber-only type setup, that you are in control of who sees your video.

Most people in the real world that have watched my videos only do it a few times then don't bother anymore. Most think its just a little weird almost like train spotting (apologies train spotters). The few that do continue to watch enjoy (I hope) the videos.

If you want to be 100% private or OCD the subscribers then their are many other video hosting sides out there.

I actually think the original idea is a good one. Youtube has just done the whole channel advert thing, to encourage people to sub to you. Having a feature that allows people to gain more videos by subscribing to you is a good idea.

Look at it this way, someone comes along, see's one or two of your videos, likes them and want more, they'd be more encouraged to sub to you, with the same benefit as what Yarek was looking for.

Yeah, pretty much what other people are saying: if anything embarrasses you or makes you feel awkward in any way then don't show it to the world.

Or, you could try adopting the same attitude that I have... which is not to worry about it! I regard myself as being pretty much unembarrassable (is that a real word..!?). Some of the guys that I work with think I'm crazy, and don't mind telling me so. But they don't understand anything about motorcycling and are in the main too afraid to try. So, basically, f*&k 'em if they don't like it!

In fact I love biking so much that I (just) made a vid in which I try to show how I feel without saying anything. If you want to see it it's here here.

I recently decided that I wanted to distance myself from a lot of motovlogging related stuff and that I wasn't happy with a lot of my videos on YouTube.

So I deleted them.

Unfortunately, this is what you have to do. If you're not comfortable with a certain person viewing your videos, then you can't make any thing public at all.
Or you could re-think what exactly it is you don't want that person to see and work around it.

I do miss seeing your Street Trip though!

Thanks Friz - I think I'll just do more videos with background music rather than ones with me talking - will give me a challenge on mucking about with overlaying soundtracks though - not sure the software I have supports it. Don't want to completely lose the lovely triple sound :)

Personally, I'd prefer to hear that street triple and NOT the music. Music either limits your viewership to people who like the same music as you, or will subject themselves to cruddy royalty-free tracks or whatever. EVERYONE who watches your video likes motorcycles, so just give them motorcycles!

That's me anyway. I watch videos all the time without some dude rambling on about something he or she doesn't really know anything about, but instead just hear the wind and the engine! It's a great 'escape' on snowy days like this where I can't get out on my bike!

After thinking long and hard about wtf I'm doing, decided "f*ck em, I'll do what I want" - so made a few vlogs public and plan on making a ride out series next month when I meet up with a few fellow Street Triple owners :)

This don't make a lot of sense considering youtube is a public viewing platform.. unless you want to make all your videos none public and give the link to whom ever you want to see it.

You can not see every one of you sub's, user's can set it to private and it will not show you whom they are in your sub list(they wont even show to you, but still count as a sub).

Seem you more or less don't want to deal with none sense comments related to your video, in that case set it to approve all comments etc and problem solved. I could be wrong with why you want to do this, but like i already stated it does not make much sense to me.

It wasn't anything to do with comments on the videos - the vast majority of comments have been very positive, with only the odd anonymous dislike here and there, so that didn't bother me at all. I also don't get wound up by the standard youtube trolls out there.

This was much more about having been promoted into a position of responsibility and concerns over whether work people would find/see my videos and form a different impression of me than that which I portray professionally. Separating work life and home life has long been important to me, so I did struggle with the possibility that these two worlds might merge. Now - well, it is what it is and life's too short to worry about it. :)
