Interesting how cameras are seen...

For those in the US, there was the use of a video camera capturing LAPD beating of Rodney King.

Now it seems that some folks with cameras are not so much interested in justice but rather fame?

This is from a local high school on social media -

Since we all use cameras, I wondered how this strikes you?

(I know there is a pun:rolleyes:)

what is OSS and ISS?
ISS - In School Suspension
OSS - Out of School Suspension

The in school is where the student is held in a classroom with others that have been in trouble. The out of school is where the student has to attend a different school that is at a different location setup just for those that need its more demanding and structured environment.

All my videos are of me and my mates, so I don't think I'll get suspended from school.
As a viewer, I tend not to watch that sort of vid, be it a fight, a Policeman being baited, or a motovlogger creating a drama out of a crisis, so at least I am not helping someone get an OSS :D

CORRECTION:
OSS is completely out of school meaning stay home.
ISS is sitting at the school building doing whatever.

I got confused with OSS and having to go to the alternative school.

So it reads as if going viral is better than not since the offender gets to sit at home vs. just sit in a class being supervised closely?

When I got suspended from school, my old man had to find stuff for me to do, it was more an inconvenience for him than it was for me. When I returned to school after my suspension, I got mobbed by all the hot girls in my class.... I learned that having a moped, and getting kicked out of school, gets you the laydees.... tis why I may have gotten myself a small cc motorcycle! :D

When I went to school, we did not have any suspending system, if it was bad, you could get a decree, and with two or three of those kicked out from school. If it was really bad you went to juvie. One of my classmates almost got the latter, for setting a girls hair on fire. That was by accident of course, but he was being careless.

OSS makes the parents lives more difficult/miserable.

I am curious if there is a caveat concerning if the student is using the video to document the incident for the school or not. I'm not saying people should snitch (we know what snitches get) but if things go to far in a fight, video evidence is extremely useful and important.

I like where you are thinking with videoing the incidents. Snitching aside (I used to work in a profession of snitching for years) one example came to mind.

Let's say a kid is getting bullied to some extent. Maybe it is a poorer kid or just socially awkward. The perps are maybe a little better socially or have family connections. Now if you are the poor kid's pal and see that time after time the antagonizing goes unpunished because there is no proof, then wouldn't you whip out a camera to document what is going on? Sure standing shoulder to shoulder is an option but you already done that and still your friend is victimized until one day they had enough and throw punches.

Perfect example. And the whole standing up for your friends idea is nice, but I will never fault a young person who does not want to fight or get hit to try an alternative method to deescalate a situation as cameras have been known to make people back down in some circumstances or force them to behave.

Cameras help make people accountable.
I'd back someone recording the situation for defense or de-escalation. The ones recording for tiktok or whatever can catch the ISS/OSS for sure though.

High school's rules do not trump school board's rules. Not only is this terrible grammar, especially coming from a high school, but if pushed to a superintendent, may not even be enforceable.

Skinnnerrrrrrrr!

Wait, you are allowed to film a school fight.
And even post it online...
As long as it doesn't go viral... o_O
I would assume, if whatever school board that's from is run how our local school board is, that's not something that would actually get enforced.

Suspensions go on these kids records, so a parent could take it to the school board and the principal could get a hand slap.

Most likely they will get a "You know the policy but we're going to make an exception for you this one time." The 'scared-straight' program b.s.

Don't know what the rules are where this is from, but if it were here, the policy is a dog with all bark, no bite.
