Has anyone done the qualification Institute Of Advanced Motorists (IAM) and if so what was you experience of it and has it effected they way you ride today?

The reason is I'm thinking of doing the course this summer and them maybe then volunteering to be a blood delivery rider (you need the IAM qualification).

Havnt done the course, but +1 for volunteering for blood delivery. I'd do it to if I had a steady job, and wasnt off to uni soon. Must be best thing to volunteer for, you just get to ride your bike even more.

my dad is an instructor with them and I have learnt a lot from him, im doing the full course this year if I have time,

the end of the day the more training people have the better

Roadcraft Nottingham would be your man to speak to with regards advanced riding.

I think he's now focusing more on Advanced Riding Cert's?

Blood bikes are freaking awesome and they're often desperate for dispatcher cover so get your name in early helping with the dispatch and they'll love you for it!

May help you get a riding position and you'll know the routes ahead of time.

Good luck!

Did you do it in the end?

I signed up with IAM on Wednesday and went out on a social ride with them yesterday from Boxhill to deepest darkest Kent. There was 17 of us in total, mainly retirees, however there were guys in their seventies leaving me for dust! The pace was blistering for a beginner like myself.

Hopefully doing my first observed ride beginning of next month.

I chose to join the Wey Valley branch over London as some friends are in it and they run a lot of rides from Boxhill which I think isn't too far from yourself either. Hopefully I'll become a better rider for it as well as getting out riding more socially too!

I'll keep you posted.

Mate of mine's dad is doing his test/final assessed ride thing at some point (he won't say when) but we went out for a ride last Friday with him and he then proceeded to spend about 3 hours giving us reams of advice ... his only criticism of the IAM guys is that they don'tn tend to leave much room for adjusting 'the rules' given certain circumstances. He gave an example but it'll take ages to explain.

On a faintly related note, has anyone heard of the Enhanced Rider Scheme? It appears to be a step between full test and IAM, but I've never actually met anyone whose done it?!

I've looked into the Enhanced Rider Scheme quite a bit, seems a better way to go to me than the IAM, because you could do one day or several its completely up to you, and what you want out of it. I've heard a lot of criticism from from my old instructor, who i still see occasionally. He says the IAM way of learning, leaves them to rigid to adapt to situations that dont fit the ones they've been taught. He's an ex police cop, and says the way they ride isn't fluid at all either, that they almost think of every corner as seperate thing, rather than a whole road flowing together. But thats just one blokes opinion.

One bloke's opinion that is suspiciously similar to the guy I'm talking about's opinion, as well as those of the 3 blokes I spoke to a work yesterday!

I'm seriously considering ERS when I (finally) get rid of the 125 and get something more entertaining. Thouroughly aware that I'm pretty rubbish on a bike and really want to be safe and comfortable in any likely situation. Also looking into getting the local Fuzz to do a BikeSafe in/near Crawley ... there are loads of Bike-Rozzers round here because of Gatwick Airport.

PS: Sorry for the mild thread hijack!

I think ERS is the way to go, if you just want one lesson you can, if you want more theres the option too. Rather than being stuck in a rigid format
