I dont know if anyone can help but just recently and the bike has never done this before it will just idle at 4000 revs, now i know temperature is cold etc but i have never seen my bike do this and it never did it last year in the cold weather either? anyone got any ideas?

Check the idle screw... a lot of bikes its about knee hight by the engine block. once bike is warmed up adjust as required. Someone may have played with it or you may have moved it by mistake.

Is it a manual choke? Check you haven't knocked the lever!

If it's an automatic one - is it doing it when you're starting the bike from cold? Does it die back to normal revs once it's warm?

Throttle cable needs adjusting, idle screw, a vacuum line cracked in the cold and letting air in.. carb or intake rubbers cracked, air filter blocked, stepper motor needs cleaning, air temp sensor gone up the spout... loads of little things can do that.. need more info to be honest. Bike, miles, maintenance done to start.
