I Got To Rant About Presenting A Good Image To The Public

I bet you may be thinking this is an anti Hooligan sermon. It is not!

I was recently in a conversation with one of my fellow riding group officers concerning putting together a ride in the fall to a nice restraint. The place asks guests to dress in smart casual. So when he heard that he said he won't back it because he will not wear a collared shirt. He then said we can't expect people to adhere to a dress code. I show him some smart casual looks for riding but he refuses and even went as far to say we cannot ask people to abide by the businesses expectation.

I countered with that was fine. We could do the ride to the place and then if anyone does not get in due to their attire or not wants to eat there, then they can ride on to McDs. I explained we expect people to own a Harley to join the Harley Owners Group so we already have some expectations for people so starting a shirt with a collar to a place because of its the business expectation is not a big deal.

What do you all think?

Reminds me of this.

Bartender says, "Sorry, we don't serve rope here"

Rope walks outside, frizzes up his hair, and ties himself in a knot, and walks back into the bar.

Bartender says "Hey, aren't you the same piece of rope that I just kicked out of here?"

Rope says "No, I'm a frayed knot"

hmm. If they don't want your custom, go somewhere that does. Plenty of dickheaded places like that over here who're all anti bikers etc. But in a way i sort of agree with your officer, if someone told me to go for a ride and wear jeans and shoes. I'd laugh at them. Im not an ATGATT type of person, but you should wear the gear your most comfortable in when riding and for me, its leathers.

After 12yrs in the RN having to iron my uniform and shave daily I don't really do smart any more so it would put me off going even if the meal was free.
Personally I think that a bike club (or owners group) should be about inclusion and it is easier to dress down than it is to dress up, why not find a restaurant which doesn't have a dress code? Am sure there are good places to eat that are less picky on the clothes folk wear! :-)

I like the one about the guy and this made of jumper cables. The host of the restaurant said he can come in and eat but he better not try to start anything.

Thanks all for the advice. We do plenty of rides to eat at places where t-shirts are acceptable but a few of the group have been asking for something other than BBQ.

It is funny how these t-shirts cost 35 USD the bikes cost 5k to 60 and the average age is 55+. We need new blood and we are not getting that.

Figure going someplace different might help. I will have to mull this over.

I can understand it if I was told I needed to follow a certain dress code which I was not keen on doing so, but instead of not backing it, I would simply just decline to join, anyone else interested can still go for it. Or like what you suggested, I could still go along for the ride, but when it comes to the eating venue, we part ways. That's doable but feels a bit awkward because we all rode together but go off to different spots to eat/hang out.

That's all about having a group, many minds, many thoughts, many expectations. You can't please everyone, and everyone has to compromise a bit here and there. Which is why I'm not a fan of being in large groups.

In your case, if the majority is against it, then change it, if the majority agrees with it, then just do it, those that do not agree can either have their own mini ride arranged by themselves, or just not join for that event, there's always future events which might be more to their liking.
