Go Pro Mic Setup

Hey all,

I have ordered the 3.5mm Mic hookup for the GoPro Hero 3+ Black Edition, and the Waterproof case for the Sena GoPro Back Pack Audio, and see if that improves my audio on my vlogs. I have the mic setup from the Sena SMH 10 and see if that works with the 3.5mm Mic Setup and my vlogs. What do you all think? Will it reduce the wind noise in my vlogs??

Nope, for the wind noise you have to add a dead cat or something to the microphone. Maybe reposition it inside the helmet.

Oh ok, well where the microphone is now, I have put it in front of the helmet, near the chin vent and above the chin skirt in my Scorpion EXO 900 Transformer helmet. Since it is a modular helmet, would that make it worse with wind noise after I get the 3.5 mm Mic Setup and the waterproof case? Sena has the microphone cord attachment that comes with it. A pic of it is at: http://www.sena.com/product/accessories/3-5mm-stereo-audio-cable/ . Do you think I would need a dead cat after I plug it into the GoPro Hero 3+ after that? I am right now using the microphone foam that comes with it. How much is the dead cat? Can I get it at any video store, or is it specifically sold online??

You don't need a dead cat or some high dollar wind blocker...You just need to experiment with how much wind blocking you need inside your helmet (or elsewhere)

Start with a sponge, cut a piece and use scissors to open a hole in the sponge big enough to insert the mic head (heheheheheh) either tape it or zip tie it at the base.

Took me 4 tries to get the right setup for cycling, but that's a TON of wind noise though...Moto is easier and requires less noise suppression

This vid has the Audio Technica 3350 wrapped in an old sponge then affixed (cough:ducttape:cough) near the cheek pad inside the helmet

Thanks for the info. Just any old sponge?? The boom microphone I have comes with Sena Communication device, and then there is the 3.5mm mic stereo wire that I plan on plugging into the 3.5mm audio jack that goes to the go pro hero 3+, and the waterproof case to reduce the wind noise, I hope. I have some videos I have made, but it has way too much wind noise, and that is why I have not posted them yet, so I will edit them to where I am either at a stop light, or my bike is shut off so I can record my voice, even though that is not much of a motovlog now I think.

Great video Arctic Pride. :)

Here's what I used

First is the sponge, second is the foam, third is the bit of crown royal bag, sewed up and then I use the zip tie to secure it but also stuff into my cycling jersey, holds it quite well!

Thanks for the pictures. That helps out a lot. I wonder if I can get that crown royal bag for cheap at a local liquor store.

I've herd that the Sena set up with gopro has great audio quality, I can't remember who said something about it but it was a prominent motovlogger.

I just made a dead cat out of a piece of Faux fur I had laying about. only need a inch or two. I also found that keeping the microphone off the shell of the helmet helps reduce wind noise a lot as well, good mic placement is everything.

Does it p!55 anyone else off that whilst the likes of Drift and GoPro have made awesome products for capturing video, the audio is still a major pain in the ass?

I'm trying to get back into Vlogging now and am planning on riding all year round as of now, so thought if use the opportunity to try and build up some decent vlogs...

...as for audio, I kinda gave up on Vlogging due to the audio being poor. I'm now planning on buying the Audio Technica ATR 3350 as Arctic Pride has done.

To get technical, the reason it SHOULD be better is it's an omnidirectional condsensor mic powered by a watch battery, so eliminates background noise.

I am planning on doing a video on it in the next week so anyone interested can see those results.

LOL you never know on the interweb! I have plenty of extra if you want me to send you a few, let me know

That's not how it works. The 3350 won't do anything regarding wind noise. Most it will do is amplify it so you'll get even poorer audio.

In a bid to sort this, I've decided to put off getting a new lav mic (the ATR3350) until I have fully exhausted the Drift mic options.

So last night, I took off the foam cover, and the additional foam cover that I had taken from an XBOX 360 headset mic, and did as Arctic suggested with the dishwashing sponge thing.

On listening to the audio from the past couple of days I have captured, the issue I have isn't so much background wind and engine noise, there appears to be a distortion that sounds almost as if it is vibrating the mic head somehow. There is now plenty of padding and a lot more foam on the mic than there was before, so hopefully *fingers crossed
