File Size And Youtube Processing

I've just been uploading my first vlog and I've found out how painfully slow my upload speed actually is

Couple of questions for you guys though.

Firstly, roughly what size files are you uploading to YouTube? My video is about 10 mins at 1080/60 and came in at 2.48GB. Would that be about standard for that resolution?

Also, how long do you find it takes YouTube to complete their processing before the video is available in full resolution?

First off congrats on the first video. The processing on youtubes part was painfully slow about two days ago for some reason? Yesterday my video was all done in like an hour? I can't really break down the timeframe for you because I don't know enough about it all. It could take several hours though just be patient.

As for the standard recording...1080 @ 60 is exciting and all but for vlogging I personally think it's overkill and not worth the time and space it takes up (uploading/memory) also will drain your battery a little quicker. I shoot at 720 @ 60 and have no problems. Typically when I watch YouTube videos I never even watch it at 720 let alone 1080. Just put it from a viewer perspective if you watch all videos at 1080 then By all means keep it there. The content is the focus especially for vlogs. i believe a majority of people don't watch motorcycle vlogs to get theater quality picture but to see the riding and hear the content discussed (just my thought)

Thanks for the advice. Maybe I'm spoiled but I tend to watch a lot of videos via Apple TV, so 1080 is important for me. I've got big hard drive (ooh err!) and disk space is relatively cheap.

The main bottleneck in the workflow is the upload speed just now.

Haha well I sound dumb for the not going 1080 thing! Yea upload speed will suffer a bit but I usually get my videos up at night and just have it upload while I'm sleeping. This way I don't worry about it at all. Maybe you could plan your videos that way to avoid that added stress of slow upload/processing

That's the plan, although 2.5GB took about 18 hours and even I don't sleep that long!

I do 1080/60 but my files are never that size. It depends on the format you are uploading in. I think my 10 minute videos are about half that size as for the quality well the feedback says it all.
Always get feedback telling me about the fantastic quality
I cant recall the format I use but will let you know when I do another video.

If you could buddy that would be awesome. I've been exporting my videos to H.264 using a MOV wrapper using Final Cut Pro X.

If I could cut the file size in half that would be fantastic.

If you're using FCPX, export (share) to the near bottom option, forgotten what its called, next page choose computer and H.264 better quality. Nips it down a bit, but fcpx is limited unless you have compressor.

It's not so much the recording format as its the final rendering format that will have the biggest impact, I use the youtube 720 preset in vegas and looks ok most 8 - 10m vids come in at around 800mb - 1.2gb but if I render in wmv or avi they are around 1.8gb or more.
Make a short test edit, Then render it out in multiple formats and have a look and experiment to find what's best for you!

Do it like me, upload at night when you are asleep. That way you are not affecting browsing speed when you have other things to do.

Overnight uploads or any other time you can just walk away. True 1080X60 (60fps option comes up on YT post upload) seems to be a little less than 1gbmin post rendering.

Unfortunately my upload speed is so slow it took about 20 hours to upload. That's the down side of living in the country.
