im in the market to buy one because i want to start keeping my footage from races on one instead of having to delete it off my internal hard drive due to it eventually using up all my memory and slowing the laptop down.

do you know of any good ones or ones to stay clear of?

I've been using a Western Digital 1.5Tb "MyBook" for close to two years now and I have had some pretty good luck with it. It is the third WD external that I have owned in the last five-or-so years and I have never had a drive failure or experienced loss of data. They are not the most portable things in the world and like most pieces of technology don't respond well to physical abuse, but as a reliable and affordable storage system I would certainly recommend it.

I have just old crude aluminium cased Freecom 120gb HDD. The capacity was awesome in it's best years but it really sucks nowadays and it's constantly full.

Something to keep in mind when reading reviews about external HDs. They're intended for use as backup drives, not constant-use primaries. If it's plugged in and hooked up and you move it there's a very good chance you'll scratch the disks, which is what typically causes failures. Use it as intended. Plug it in, transfer data, unplug it. Do that and the drive should last forever, pretty much regardless of manufacturer.

I learned something today :)

Something you guys might what to consider if you have a highspeed network is a media server with RAID set (more than one hard drive mirroring the data). They are not that costly now a days and you can always use them to stream your music and data around the house too.

Just a thought ;)

I have one of these Its great, I have almost filled it though... When I got it it was only £22 it was on offer, I should have got about 5 xD
