Does Anyone Keep Chickens?

dandoolittle

Site owner, lovely and adorable
Moving into a house on a farm. I've been told that I can have a couple of chickens so pretty chuffed.

I doubt I'll let them leave my garden as such (decent sized) and I'll only have a couple

Question is - Are they a pain in the arse to keep?

Question is, why do you want chickens and what do you plan to do with them?

Are they for a free range organic Sunday roast or for expensive eggs?

Something to do more than anything else lol

I guess the odd free eggs will be the bonus. Probs wont eat them

young hens have ugly deformed eggs. probably won't be eating any free eggs until they mature a bit more.

Make sure they be locked up safe at night and you still need to throw corn down for them. Eggs are nice tho so don't waste them!

My parents had some for a short time. The only lesson that I learned is that a dog can get them through a standard chain link fence. So, have a good fence and no dog. Preferably both.

Chickens are specifically prohibited in my HOA covenants. lol

My girlfriends family had some for a while, they were pretty hassle free. Apart from one attacked another.. Then the rest kept plucking it so it got spray painted purple.. Apparently chickens go mental if they see blood.

If you don't really want to have them, how about giving them away? Yes you can just leave them to their own devices but being in a compound there's bound to be a mess, like feathers and chicken-poop. If you have no time to care for them, I'd say just give them away.

What the two shit flying...

If it's something to do, keep dogs or sheep. :D Cows? You'd get milk. Horses I'm sure are expensive. Maybe an organic farm?

Doggies it is. Little woof balls.

I broke my neck falling from a horse. I can't have a dog as live on my own and well, its cruel. A cow bit me. I like sheep

Pretty hassle free as far as farm animals go.... food, water, coop, straw for nesting, done. The pain comes from keeping them safe from other animals. They're pretty vulnerable. Predators are relentless and will find the weak spots in your coop. Best of luck! Enjoy the eggs!
