Do You Use Smartphones For Recording?

Hi,
I wanted to ask you whether you use iPhones or other smartphones for recording fly-bys? We have produced #motoeye for recording video and registering gps track while riding and I wonder if you'd be open enough to comment on it? App is new, free and with no feedback at the moment. We need directions to evolve. Do not ban me from the forum for this post, please. We are very small team and do not have thousands of dollars for R&D department, thus the question asked.

I use mine for audio satnav but that's about it. I'd be interested in a gps tracking tool if I could overlay it somehow on my videos.

You need to support Android though as it's the most common mobile platform.

Yes we are planning to release the Android - we are working on collecting funds but firstly we must put iOS to the stage that Android is set to appear. We were testing overlays, different approaches as rendering is very time consuming and processor intensive. We've ended with some conclusions I can not sell now as there are no solution for now.
Constantly working on the software...

I hope we'll be able to prepare it sooner than later but you can ask your friends, if you will.
We'll double and triple our efforts as there are a lot of voices wanting Android build and we have no immediate solution for that. Pity :(
 
Android phone here as well. Most of my friends have androids. I know just ONE person who has an apple phone.
I do use my phone to record the ride with GPS. No video though because the camera is not the best but I also use it to record audio when I need ambient or "outside the helmet" audio.

By a fly-by I ment a short trip with no destination, just to ride for fun with no other purpose.
We'll try to make an Android as soon as possible but the system is divided and it is cost intensive so we have to raise some more money fot that. Which is what we are doing now :) I'll let you know of the progres because I like this forum and your movies. I was able to see only a few but still this was a fun!

So answering your question, we mainly use action cameras to get video, the phone is sometimes used to record audio, not video because the camera is not wide-angle and it's hard to record a motorcycle ride using a phone, it is not the proper tool, it is not easily mounted anywhere on the bike or inside the helmet.
If I need to record the track I'm riding in, using GPS, I use my phone and "ViewRanger" or my stand-alone Motorola GPS using the built-in recorder in "iGO".
To share tracks with other riders I sometimes use "WeRide".
 
We were testing GoPro and Countour triggering by wi-fi, would it make a difference for you if we add such a functionality? Phone would be responsible for registering a GPS track and starting/stopping the cam on your head then. And there is GPX import coming to the next build. You could share registered route through that format as well as add some external track. Plus spoken directions of course, it's a nav. As for the "not too wide angle" I'm personally using an optrix case it has an interchangeable 175 degrees lens and some other options. My iPhone5 connected to the hand bar using ram x-mount doesn't vibrate much and videos are usable as well (no interference recorded).
WeRide had some security issues lately, our developer reported it to theirs team, and I'm not sure they have corrected them by now. The app is decent though.

You cannot start a Drift over WiFi though, it uses the 433 MHz band for the remote.
I don't know about the new ones.
Another camera that has wifi is the Liquid Image 727. Not many vloggers are using it since it's useless for vlogging.

We have a GoPro Hero 3+ ans ion AirPro, both can be triggered, but we have actually made just a few tests. To include all of it onto a build a lot of further research would be necessary - maybe even a coop with the manufacturers.
 
We didn't have a chance to buy all of them, unfortunately. We do not have a lab, there are only three of us and in this case only one is capable of making such tests. It'll take either time or money which we do not have yet :( Hope this will change soon... What we have tested though is the movie and route sync on the web app so we could rewind or play the movie and watch the route parameters of GPS and the rest. We are working on it and raising funds to provide this functionality to the public.

Its either that, or plug it directly into my Sony AS30V, or plug in an Audio-Technica ATR3350iS directly into the cam. Not quite sure what to do at the moment.
