Do You Use 2k Or 4k? Will 1080 Be Sufficient?

As I watch many of the larger Vloggers, most seem to be using 2k or 4k. It's also mentioned that you need these as the standard level of quality to be successful.
What do you think? I can't really tell the difference between 1080 and 2K on my computer.

I'm no experienced vlogger but I don't mind watching videos in 1080. Actually, most of the time i use 1080 over the higher resolutions just because it loads faster.

My computer loads quick in 2k/4k, I just don't notice a significant difference.

According to YouTube, more people are accessing the site from mobile devices (tablets and phones), how many can do 2K/4K yet? And if those which can manage 2K, how many are out there vs how many 720/1080 devices?

Other question is - on a 5-10" screen, is there any benefit of above 720p?

I just tested my Samsung S5 and couldn't notice a difference between 720 and 1080, at least not to my eyes. However, on my kids new iPhone, I could notice a difference between the two.
Do you think recording in 720 is good enough for youtube? Or do you need to go to at least 1080? Reason being, potential battery life of a GoPro is up to 30 minutes more in 720 than 1080, which opens a whole new can of worms.

Exactly what I was going to say. Look at your analytics, and see what people are viewing your stuff on.

1080 is on the lower end now, sadly.

Anything below that is not going to get you a decent amount of subs

However, I dont think 4k is really needed now either?

Personally theres no point in going 2k or 4k since youll be catering to such a small portion of your viewers. Rather stick to 1080 max. Your viewers will be able to load the video faster and it looks good. Especially 48fps or 60fps.

I do 970 to 1080 mainly because I don't have a 4k Camera but also, even if I did I'd probably only do certain things in 4K not the full Vlog.

the problem with YT is that they compress the hell out of the footage, 4k does look juicy though, not worth the extra hassle IMO

If you can do 2k 60fps, awesome. If not. nah. Framerate is more important IMO, due to the bouncy shaky nature of motovlogs.
Personally I run 50fps 720p, and I only feel the need for an upgrade so I can go for 1080p at 50fps or more.

Your image with a 4k capable camera set to 1080p will most likely be nicer than a camera that can do up to 1080p, particularly if you use wide mode, as it downscales a larger image instead of upscaling which is what some 2k cameras do to achieve 4k.

My opinion is more that good content finds its audience, technical specs isn't that critical if its usable as it is.

Resolution is overrated imo. I can rarely playback YT videos at 1080 on my home monitor anyways, 720 barely keeps up before buffering and to me looks fine. Of course I just changed my modem with significant speed increases. Try living with playing back at 360 for 10 years....you'll think 720 is amazing.

If you think people like your videos just because it's at 1080p you're crazy...it's about the content, not resolution. Everybody wants the newest and greatest to just keep up with the Jones'.

I was wondering about that because I did a video in 1080 60fps and it looks great when I watch it on my computer. When I watch it on YouTube, it doesn't look as good.

Right now I use 1080 Superfine at 60fps. I did a 2K and couldn't tell the difference. I agree with the good content comment. If it's good, people will watch it. Hopefully, mine will fall into that category.

this isn't my video but surely you guys can see the difference between 1080 and 4k, its night and day on even a smaller laptop screen

It's different when encoded in to the same vid. It's only on my Mac I can tell the difference between RJ's 4K and 1080p offerings, and then it's not that marked for me. Admittedly can only view up to 2.5K.

I use 1080/ 60fps. I agree with another comment frame rate is more important. I would rather watch something at 720/60 that 4k /30. 30 fps is too shaky or jerky and makes for a hard video to watch. So I feel like 1080/ 60 is the sweet spot between good quality footage, battery life, and SD card capacity.
