So some of you might be aware, I rode my UK motorbike from NYC to LA in July. My bike has finally arrived back in the UK after nearly 2 months at a depo in LA/ on the sea! Still another week till it clears customs :(

So I was hoping to get some feedback on my USA series. Are they too long? I personally think they are some of the best videos I've made, or at least the best content but many of my viewers seem to disagree :(

Help me of wise and knoble Motovlog team !!

Here's the latest one

The helmet taking up 1/3rd of the screen is pretty hard to get past. That's -very- distracting. Made it hard to pay attention to the rest of the video, there's just this huge black hole sucking my eyes in. There's also not enough chatter for me, I want to hear what you're thinking, not sit here listening to music and watching someone ride through a field. I just saw a picture of Mt Rushmore...Google can do that too. We didn't hear anything about what you thought of it, or what you thought of the badlands, just music. Also...that music is horrible imo. Had I not been making a point to watch the whole video for the purposes of critique I would have stopped watching when it hit the 1m mark. I actually did stop, but I decided to keep going to see what else would happen. Would have been a whole lot better with more commentary, or the engine noise, or wind noise, or...I dunno. Almost anything would be better than whatever that was.

I'm not trying to be mean, just honest, so don't take it personally. There was a fair bit that made that video unwatchable for me.

For what it is I liked it :)

Now what Im saying there its some ones holiday snaps ;) I'm sure you love it as it is your holiday and some of the best riding you ever had. So your memories will be tinted. In all honesty most of the popular bike videos on youtube are as you say the near miss stuff or people who have a vast following and the gift of the gab.
It's the nature of the beast, your video is more of a record not strictly entertainment.

Still liked though ;)

I'm enjoying watching the videos. I've been watching your stuff for a while now, so have become interested in what you're doing.

You were one of the first channels I found that I subscribed to, but, I must admit, it would be nice to see you engage more with your audience. As has been mentioned, a little commentary about what you're doing, why, and how you feel about it would make all the difference.

thanks everyone for your feedback! I'll try and put some voiceover in the future videos :D

With regards to the music, it's hard to find anything that isn't totally crap that you can monetize!

Thanks again!

I actually quite like the music

i subbed .. so i can catch the other vids also... :D

and im waaaaaay new at vlogs and editing .. but

agree with the helmet in screen .. it is a little 'there' .. more camera angles perhaps?... top of helmet, front/side fairing... on the bars looking back at you .. just for 'cuts' ? ... that the right term? .. put short clips of other angles in .. draw the viewer into your actions and movements on the bike..

saying that ive only done 2 angles so far myself .. working out whats going to be best stable mount positions..

music i dont mind .. too much ... but perhaps a few fade in/out to engine noise, environment noise, wind softly rushing past ..

like the NYC to somewhere vid ... cruising down the main street .. a few 'cabs honking horns' .. or a short vocal 'wow look at that guy or building ' something? ..

as i say im new to editing .. and have a hell of a lot of tips/tricks i need to pickup/learn ... im just trying to think what entertains me in general about vlogs by others... and without replicating anyone elses style .. learning how to use those moments/highlights to bring my own vids to watchable level..

wow you have a lot of views! .. .. and here i am blathering on.. but just watched douche of the day with the black cab ... noises like that .. if you had them in the NYC vid... even without nearly getting hit... it adds the realism and 'being there' !!
just sayin my thoughts in case it helps your thoughts :D

thanks again for the adivce guys. The problem with the camera angle is that, as it's a flip helmet I can't put it on the top like I do on my other helmets! Plus putting it on the side gives a lot less drag when doing high speed long distance runs. The other problem is that I've now returned from my trip so I can't really get any other angles now :( Perhaps I should try and learn some CGI tricks :)

Certainly a lot of food for thought so thanks once more

What kind of camera do you use? I use a Drift HD mounted on the side and my helmet doesn't take up a third of the screen. As a matter of fact it takes up none of the screen. Occasionally on offroad videos if the camera gets hit by something you might catch a glimpse of my helmet otherwise you never see it.

If you're interested you may be able to talk me into doing a helmet cam setup video.

Here's my latest video so you can see what it looks like.

Good idea to put text on it!
Kryten I'm using a GoPro 3, On my other helmets the view isn't obscured at all. I had to make that sacrafice as the GoPro isn't excatly aerodynamic and having it on the top of the helmet is fine most of the time but when you are doing 5 hours a day mostly at 70mph your neck starts to hurt!

A helmet cam setup is always interesting!

i cant find the actual video where you got run over!? ;)

few close calls.... but you seem to imply from the title that you got run over... wanna see that! :P
