Right I'm going to buy a Desktop PC, Bear in mind I've never owned a Desktop PC only ever a Laptop/Notebook.

I've got 1 problem, which is better?

Intel Core i3-2120 Dual Core, 2GB-RAM, 1TB-HDD
@ 3.3Ghz Processor Speed.

or

Intel Pentium G860 Dual Core, 6GB-RAM, 1TB-HDD
@2.6 Ghz Processor Speed.

The rest is the same spec.

I don't know out of the 2 which would be better. (Both same price)

But more RAM = Slower Processor, Less RAM = Faster Processor
I can always increase the RAM I guess.

Cheers

I think you answered your own question there 8-) You'll cut rendering time down with more processor. A proper pc or mac would be best if video is the main focus for the upgrade. Unless it's a super high end gaming laptop, a desktop just has better voltage and cooling delivery in regard to the cpu. I'm no tech by any means and it's just an opinion.

I say the i3, simply for the Hyper Threading.

But seriously, build it yourself. Either read a few articles or recruit a geek friend to give a helping hand. More importantly it can be cheaper, plus when you choose the components you can improve how futureproof it is, like sticking a decent power supply in it that'll survive a few upgrades.

I agree, build it your self. You can kit it out spercifically for video editing if you want then.

If you're dead set on buying one of them the only logical sense is the i3. Just make sure its 64 bit then shove as much RAM in there as you can buy.

What's the rest of the specs + price out of interest?

i3 for above reasons, and building your own pc is so easy so would recommend that also. As friz said, just buy more ram

I might look into this, I poped into PC world today and he suggested I build my own.

Price around £500.

I'm not the most computer minded person, I've only ever put RAM in my laptop before so building a computer would it be really difficult.

I was told I can buy a motherboard with the i3 CPU, 6gb RAM & 500gb HDD built in so I would need OS, Case & Graphics card.

Anything else I would need ? providing cables come with it.

If it's the i3 it won't need a graphics card, they have their own and they've improved a lot from how they used to be (ie. crap).

The key thing with building a PC for the first time with little knowledge is to take your time.

This is a good example of what can be bought for £500 though it doesn't include an OS, display, mouse or keyboard. If that £500 for that pre-built gets you a decent monitor and a halfway decent keyboard and mouse then it's not too bad value seeing as its only major compromise is the lack of graphics card which you'll only really need for playing games.

try and put RAM in with 2 sets of the same size RAM like 2 x 2Gig or 2x4Gig. You don't get 3 Gig rams so they end up putting in 1x4gig and 1x2Gig which means that you have 2 channels running rather than one which will slow down overall performance aswell.

As long as you don't buy anything from pc world :P

You need a power supply and fans as well. And I'd recommend a graphics card even if the one built into the i3 is alright. Especially since you're doing video editing.

Friend of mine once got sold a more upmarket computer case because "well this one has holes in the front so the static will get in, this one has a door to stop that from happening".

Thankfully I was only 2 aisles over. The PFY (pimply faced youth for those who are not a fan of the BOFH) didn't really like me calling BS on his sales tactic.

Don't think I've ever bought anything except for work from pc world, even their blank cds are over priced

There can be the occasional bargain to be had in Pissy World, but the vast majority of items in there are overpriced.
