Yes well never buy a V-Strom if you like to check your filters regularly, Thankfully I found I have a lifetime filter installed and it was rather clean so I am happy with that at least.
 
If you're very careful, you can actually get the tank up/off without having to remove the side fairings... Didn't do it myself, my mechanic did; that said, I would probably just take them off to be safe, I'd rather take a little extra time than risk damaging my fairings/something else...

But yeah, it's not fun having to get into the inner workings on this bike. :(
