Hello guys and gals!

Well i have had my Yamaha YZF-R125 for a few weeks now and i have noticed the chain is getting a bit rusty, i phoned Yamaha and they said that i shouldn't put 3 in 1 oil on it but a proper Motorbike chain oil, question is, what is the best to go with? I have no experience in this and i just want something that will keep my bike healthy, any help would be much appreciated

Well personally I cannot speak from experience (I ride a scooter :P) but what my friends buy is chain wax from our local dealership. If you've got a bike you want to keep clean most of the time then wax is definitely the thing to get, you have none of that oil splash up the side of your bike/on your nice clean rims!

I think the latest batch of stuff is this http://www.laguna.co.uk/shop-laguna.asp ... aintenance It's not a wax per say but it's a dry lubricant. My mate (who's nuts about the maintenance of his Ninja 250R) swears by the stuff.

Id love to hear what others say about wax/dry lube as I'm old school and always uses the sticky oil. Just my first experiences with wax wasn't too good, just gunked up the chain and was a bugger to clean off.

I just used to apply engine oil with a paintbrush on my last bike which had a chain, seemed to keep the chain lubed well enough but it made a horrific mess of the back wheel/rear of the bike.

Don't use oil, you only end up with a sticky mess up your back and just like with sex, that's never a good sign! :P

I use Wurth Dry Chain lube based on a whole load of recommendations from people on another bike forum I'm on.

I use a Scottoiler.
Never had a problem with a dry lube.
Wouldn't recommend WD40, too much contrasting advice.
Used engine oil works if you're a cheapskate ;)
Every 600 miles my manual recommends.

Just speaking from personal experience, been doing it for years and never had to replace a chain or had one snap. May be coincidence. Heard of substance in aerosol knackering O rings but again, never had a problem. I don't use the tuono that often so I suppose my other choice is DX11 from Oxford. It'd last longer if you don't apply as often as you should.

Yup, and a quick look on the WD40 site states "•Lubricates drive chain on motorcycles"
I guess any lube is better than no lube and can prolong the life of your chain considerably. Oh and checking tension.

For sure. Customers ask me how often to lube chains. I say if you travel every day and it's raining, then every 2 or 3 days. Just dont let it go dry or it'll heat up and stretch I've tried 2 scottoilers, on one, I couldn't be arsed to check the reservoir and the chain dried (my fault) and on another (and MANY customers bikes we've serviced) the inner chain plates were totally dry and rusting.

Ah you see you need to adjust the rate at which it releases the oil. In order to avoid rusty inners, open it up until you're dripping it all over your patio, it's leaking down your side stand and maybe even landing on your back whilst riding ;)
