Broken Before It Began.

Aprilia RS 125
So... I traveled to Leeds on Saturday to pick up an Aprilia RS 125 2006 12k miles.

I took it out for a spin and it ran beautifully! like Magic!

So after the satnav decided there was no route available home i just headed in the general direction of home and did quite well.

That was until 45 miles into the trip, she gave up on me. After a quick inspection i realized there was no 2 stroke in it. So i topped it up, but no luck, she wouldnt turn over.

After a kind Pub landlord pushed me to the top of a hill and then back down to bump start it, we had life!! that was until the revs dropped below 4k RPM and it cut out.

So up the hill we went again, back down and there was once again life! so i held the revs at at-least 5k for another 30 miles or so.

That when she decided to cut out doing 45mph. change down gears it would get life for about 2 seconds and then die.

So i pushed it for about 4 miles according to the google machine when i got home.

I have checked:

- Fuel
- Spark
- Compression
- Oil
- Battery

There is enough fuel and is being pumped through.
There is a spark from the plug so ive cleaned it and the park is fine so it seems.
Covered the spark hole with my thumb and there was a decent amount of compression.
Oil is just under the Max line and is being pumped through fine.
The battery has been on trickle charge for the last 12 hours so is nice and full.

Still nothing.

The only thing i can think to do is change the plug, give the fuel and air filter a clean and cross my fingers. :/

Vlogs will be on hold for a while until it gets fixed :(. Sorry guys!

Might make a couple videos of me tinkering or just talking about it....

Has it been sitting unused for a long time?
If so id do a complete oil and filter change and drain the fuel and push fresh stuff through it.
The guys said no... maybe a couple months at very most. i stuck £12 petrol in it when i picked it up so it had fresh juice. but changing the filters is going to be done this weekend hopefully. I need to get it running ASAP.

Cheers for the reply dude :)

Weird, I know nothing about two stroke, but sounds like you're on with the checking.

Have you tested the battery voltage at rest, and can you start it at all to check voltage across the rev range with the headlight on?

Yeah im on a few forums so im trying to get knowledge from across teh spectrum. Getting a compression checker tomorrow and looking for 150+ or im knackered lol :P

My biggest fear is it needing a big end rebuild within 48 hours of ownership... :/ Chers for the reply Lurch :)

I was thinking regulator, if that's all over the place depending on revs, then it could affect the running. Simple to check if the bike is running.

If it was still over here, I've got a good selection of tools and a little storage space, and failing that, there's a bike mechanic over the road :)

ah, its first stopped in a little town of which i dont know, just outside of the twisty roads of the peak district, just outside the Gun Inn Pub.. lovely bunch of people :D even gave me a pint of coke whilst i was waiting for landlord :P Well with it being easter weekend i have 4 days to have a tinkle....

But last night, i dug a little deeper and just found more problems!

The exhaustis only pushed over the end and is held in place by the bracket on the end can.

There is a monumental amount of black oil kinda stuff on the underside of the engine.

On the 2 stroke oil container there is some tissue pushed in to one of the holes to block it off. Not the sensor one but the one at the back.

there is a snapped wire coming from the front right indicator.

the carb and air filter pulled out without un-tightening the clips.

The air filter smells like petrol.

I have took the tank off completely, side fairings are off, air filter out, carb is out.

I have a feeling the gasket has gone hence the oil everywhere, the fuel is coming through the fuel lines fine, the breather and overflow are fine, new spark plug in and sparks great (B9ES i think).

Ill check the compression tonight/tomorrow depending on how much time i have.

Sounds like you have a good project on your hands there! I take it you bought this privately?

oh yes... haha :P

Limited tools, no spare parts (yet), no idea what the problem(s) is... will be a fun month.

but i am determined to get it on the road by teh end of April just in time for summer and i can start vloggin again! yay

I think before you buy anything you need to see if the engine can be turned by turning the back wheel, taking the spark plug out will make turning it easier, and removing the starter will tell you if there is anything jamming it. Should the engine be seized, spending anything else may be wasted money.

I dont think teh engine is seized, as its trying to start it just wont fire.
I dont even know where the starter is on this or how to remove it :L i downloaded a manual last night (being the 21st century) so ill have a browse when i get home tonight. ill take the head off, remove the spark and stick it in gear to see if i can get it turning then :) never thought of that cheers (Y) I appreciate the replies buddy :D

I had oil like that, turned out to be the rocker cover gasket was leaking! Could see the streaks down the engine, mercifully that's easy and cheap to fix. Don't clean it off before you start, take off as much as you can to expose the engine and work out where it's coming from before wiping it off. Fortunately mine was a runner, so I could clean off the engine and then run it to see where it was coming from. Careful use of brake cleaner and a toothbrush gets oil out of nooks and crannies, but do wash any brake cleaner off paint and rubber pretty soon after applying it! A good commercial degreaser and cleaner will help too.

I would suggest while you have the bike in many bits to do a full service, tappets, brake fluids etc etc. as it will save you doing it for another good while. Look up all the service items in the book and just make one list of them all!

Well their no brake fluid in the rear brake reservoir thing so im thankful i made it so far home!

I've already bought a new air filter, new spark plugs, looking at gaskets, jets (no idea what sizes i need yet though, waiting for a guy from PJME to get back to me), i have no idea where the fuel filter is but that will be changed, starter motor, battery, might even go all custom and get colored hoses and lines, anodized bolts etc, having a full respray in gloss black and flake gold... give it time and it will look the nuts :D
