Bike is now trackable

I found a good place in my Africa Twin to hide a Samsung SmartTag 2, in case it gets stolen.

The issue I have with all them smart tags and apple equivalent is, they depend of specific phone brand to be near by, to be able to send you the info.
In my opinion it won't replace a proper tracker. Even proper trackers won't work, when jammer is used, which in case of most vehicle thefts, it is.

There can be dead zones and jammers, for sure, but I was able to track my wife in real-time as she traveled two thirds the way across America to watch the total eclipse and visit a friend.
I know it's not a perfect solution, but it's way better than nothing.
If I'd of had one hidden on my last motorcycle, I might still own it, as the police acted fast on looking for it in two cities, and they chased it a few times when the thief was out joyriding on it like a madman, but they never caught the thief (it was a ZX-14R with 207hp where the wheel meets the road).
It might even lower my motorcycle insurance by having on on my motorcycle. I have top-tier full-coverage insurance that includes theft insurance, and they always ask if I have an alarm or tracker on it. I'll have to look into it.

I get the insurance justification, absolutely. Also I get the desire to have such tracking option on the bike. I have researched the options somewhat, few years ago, and this is why I reached the conclusion, that the tracker needs to have it's own connectivity with cellular network, not be only bluetooth and depend on random passers by, to send the signal out.
Was your wife using one of the required phone brands, by any chance, and thus enabling that described tracking?

The SmartTag 2 uses both Bluetooth and Ultra Wide Bandwidth, as well as nearby nearby phones using mobile data, and there are 1-billion Android users who's phones can potentially report the location to me, so there were lots of other Android phones, smart watches and tablets on the flights that she was on, and three major airports, that helped me track her.
It's not a perfect solution, but it's inexpensive, and much better than using nothing.

Never knew those tags can use any android phone, without the owner needing to give any special approval for such data exchange. Pretty scary, but intriguing
