Hey guys. Bought a wee Yamaha SR125 the other day yay! Got the insurance all sorted for but need breakdown cover, just incase. So, who's the best to go with? Probably will need At Home possibly Recovery too.

Although I imagine everyone else will say they're fine, I hate the AA for when they screwed me over when I got a puncture in my back tyre in a car park.

Long story short; I was stuck in said car park for about five hours, it got dark in that time. More importantly, it got put on the back of a sub-contracted vehicle, taken off it as per AA's request to put it on their own vehicle (which never appeared), and then left me there. To top things off, the vehicle that came to pick me up in the end was the same one that came in the first place with the same driver.

HATE THEM.

I keep hearing bad things about the AA, but they turned up for me on a Sunday morning at 9am, 15 minutes after I called and fixed my puncture.

RAC were pretty good when I had a problem with my throttle. It took them 20 Minutes to turn up and did the job in about 10 minutes in the rain. With recovery it comes down to traffic, weather, requirement and how busy they are. When I crashed a lorry mechanic turned up on his own with a trailer. luckily for him Mikesmotorbike and Sstimmyy were there and we hoisted the knackered bike into the trailer. Least to say there was no proffesionalism and it was not acceptable that a van, trailer and one man turned up knowing the bike was not rolling and would take a hoist or more than two people to put it on a trailer. My Advice would be RAC as in my experience (which isn't much but still) they managed to arrive and fix the bike no problem.

I've had the RAC breakdown for my car in the past and they were quite good. Probably will go with them then.

And here's a pic of my bike.

Yeah the other week i was waiting 4 hours for them to come pick me up on a busy road -.-

I've always been recovered - eventually, but had shoddy, average, and great service from both the AA and the RAC.

Apart from that, no one seems prooperly geared up for bikes.

It's worse now all 3 bikes have inner tubes, cos they always send a van, can't fix the puncture, then send a flat bed.

OK - I have a car and 2 bikes, so need a policy that covers ME rather than the vehicle, and also want home-start.

There is only one answer:

£38 per year.

The catch? You have to pay for the recovery/repair, and then you claim it back from Auto Aid. I'm sure tehy make most of their money off people who don't bother claiming.

I've been with them for a good few years but never called them out. What they do is contract the recovery to the firm closest to you, and they come out, so in theory you get whoever is free. If this scares you, I've been with other much better known companies and they sent out a local recovery firm rather than their 'own', so it's nothing unusual.

Reviews I've seen say that Auto Aid pay out claims very quickly with no hassle.

I think the problem the OP had was that they broke down in Winter, and you can bet 100's of others had also broken down on that day, so it's pretty much tough titty. You had to wait. So did a lot of other people. It's not ideal on a bike, but the sexist idiots prioritise women in case they get raped in their nice warm car, rather than bikers who might actually die of exposure of a different kind.

You were unlucky with your experience, but I don't think the story would have been much different whoever you were with...

2nd to last break down, it was just after mid night on the m3 and my bike started to misfire, I could tell it was only firing on 3 cylinders, sensible thing would have been to stop, but I limped up the m3 to fleet services, cos I didn't fancy waiting on the side of a foggy motorway, and whilst I had a long wait it was warm, and I got free coffee off the guy there who had just done his cbt. :)

Well picked up my bike, got about 3 miles and it cut out on a roundabout. Cranks but wont fire :( Had to be escorted off the roundabout with a police car behind me so now sitting in a bus stop waiting on the AA. The joys of biking.

I've used auto aid for 5 years. 2 call outs, cars not bikes. both within 30 mins. Refunded within 2 weeks. You can pay more, I think £65 and they pay everything. But for the amount of times I've need to call, £38 a year is perfect.

In 2 years of riding, I've never needed to call breakdown people out. The only time I needed assistance was when my moped broke down at work. I just called the dealer I bought it from, paid £10 and they picked it up. I guess I'm just lucky.

Im tied in with the Honda care cover which means if i break down i am at the mercy of whoever locally they can get out to help me. Although on the 2 occasions i have called them one was a local garage and they were excellent and the second time it was The AA and they were great too!

Hello Chrus600, we would like to look into this for you, please email the details to chat@theaa.com including reference FB28785. We look forward to hearing from you. Regards The AA
