Adv Bikes

In my never ending search for the perfect bike for me I started a youtube bike review called the triple C motorcycle review. Recently I reviewed the versus 650 by kawasaki. That started down the never ending spiral of adventure motorcycles. If you own one can you give me your thoughts on things I should know before I get in to deep. Is the adventure bike world all it is cracked up to be? What are the consistent pit falls? Will my mother approve? Can dogs ride with me? Are they really do it all machines? Plus all quirky thoughts that only you would be brave enough to say or type. =)

Get the bike that can do all the terrain you want to do. For me that means a capable bike like the KTM 9X0 Adventure. I've done everything from touring to single track and can hang with the sport bikes in the twisties. I'd steer clear of the street bikes that pretend to be adventure bikes. Once you get one, spend some dough on skid plates and whatever else the bike needs to have good crash protection. Spend lots of time on dirt bikes and build up those off road skills.

Great response. Plenty for me to work with. Thank you.

It's not just the terrain, but the distance you want to cover and the comfort of riding and handling.

For example a lighter DRZ like mine, would handle almost all kinds of difficult terrain far better than a heavier KLR 650 or even an Africa Twin, but if you plan on going long distances at higher speeds, it is definitely not the bike of choice.

Also consider motorcycles with designs you know how to fix.

You can ride a DRZ long distances (done it). You can't ride a Goldwing up a rutted out rocky hill climb.
I mean you can, I have one and it's always possible. Hell I could ride around the world on a Supercub. But it's not going to be comfortable on the long haul, nor fast, nor have the range between fill ups.

Personally if money and supplies are not the problem, for a RTW/ long trip an Africa Twin is definitely a better choice than the DRZ.

Those are some points that I took into consideration when I first got my bike.
I have a 2003 650GS Dakar from BMW, its a decent all rounder with very good reliability. Older tech, so i can also do all the maintenance myself.

For me the list was:
  1. Commuting, decent economy (as this is what I'd use it for mostly)
  2. Off-road capable (nothing too gnarly, but I can still go where the average 4x4 cannot)
  3. Luggage options (for camping, and longer touring)
  4. Okay highway speeds (for those long straights. Nothing superbike worthy but max 160 fully loaded and I am happy)
