30fps V 60fps

Hey everyone,

I recorded my first vid at 30fps and my 2nd at 60fps. Not sure if I missed a step in editing, but I can't tell that much of a difference. I use Final Cut Pro X for editing and a GoPro hero4 black for recording.

Any tips on how to improve the video quality in FCP?

I use 60fps in final cut ..i think 30 fps works better at night (so I've been told)but never use it

I use 1080 with 60fps and it works so great so far.
It takes more time for rendering but it worth it

That's what I keep hearing, but my 30fps and 60fps videos look them same. That's why I was wondering if I missed something in FCP.

If you didnt notice the difference, its most likeley because you imported both videos into Final Cut Pro at 1920p 30fps. You need to configure the video settings BEFORE you import the video. And yes theres a huge difference between 30fps and 60fps. If you notice, 60fps has alot more motion blur (example: when you turn your head with the camera and make a sudden movement) and when you put it in slow motion at 50% it looks significantly smoother than 30fps. Now, 30fps is freaking awesome, but as they say, once you go 60fps, theres no going back hahaha the only times i use 30fps is at night because gopro handles low lights WAYY better at 30fps :)

What he said

Always something stupid with me. That's most likely the problem. I remember sharing to youtube and see 59.XX FPS, but I completely spaced on the importing. I have to download to GoPro studios first so I can cut and trim clips, then import to FCP to edit. It's a pain, but I'll remember that for next time and the 30FPS for my night time shooting.

Thanks guys!

To get FCPX to do 60fps, when you create a new project within a library, you dictate the settings there, so you get 1080p, 60fps and your audio and codec settings. Set it to 30fps (or leave it unchanged) then it will only do you a 30fps video.

Thanks guys. Will do Lurch. Next week I will set that up for the future. Thanks again. I guess I will only use 30fps for night time shooting.

Missed what camera you have, but the Drifts will drop the frame rate in some low light conditions automatically.

Hero4 black here. Was thinking about the drift because the Hero is like a wind block on the side of my helmet. Maybe next year.

In all my old videos, i think they were all 30FPS once i had rendered it out. They came out fine and i dont think ill be going the 60fps route... mianly because the rendering will kill my laptop off :P when i get something that can open both paint and a calculator at the same time i may *upgrade* to 60 fps

I have an Imac so 60fps isnt really a problem but i thought youtubes decoding process reduces it to 30fps and a "Lower 1080p" quality. Cmpared to your PC Youtubevidios look abit trash. Mabie just me. Im New BTW so HI

YT reencodes but doesn't lower fps or resolution.

What you send it, YT keeps. However, it can take a little time for YT to encode to ALL resolutions and only offers 60fps at 720p and better. So give it an hour, and/or check that your output file is definitely 60fps. What YT can affect is quality though.

Welcome SDribbler! +1 to Lurch. I did go back and check FCP settings and it looks like the videos did import and got shared at 60fps. Maybe it has something to do with the added clips in the vid that are at 30fps and 720p
