Howdy folks,

I was wondering what people do who don't have English as their native language. Basically that's the largest part of Europe (and Asia and Africa and South America :)).
I always felt my English was good enough to express myself. I can read and write it . And speak it. At least that's what I thought.
That was until I decided to start vlogging. It turns out that speaking is more of a challenge than I thought it was gonna be.
Probably because in real life I never have to do so. In my head everything is OK but when I hear the recording it's really strange.
Anyone had that problem before? Will it improve over time? Probably. But still it's embarrasing.
When I watch a vid on YT and the guy talking speaks bad English I find it hard to keep watching. It bugs me.
So what did you guys do?

Cya!

How many German speaking motovlogers are out there. You might have more chance of getting somewhere speaking in your native tounge.

Sure the audience might be smaller than if you speak English, but if you think nobody is going to watch it doesn’t matter.

It’s all about discovery at your stage. I think you will have more chance speaking German than English at the moment.

How about if you did 2 vlogs a week, one in German and the other in English?
You could possibly record them both on the same ride and use the German one to script it, then the English one based on that script so you didn't have to think so hard about the words?
I run 2 cameras generally and find it really helps with editing as I can break up the footage so the audience does not notice gaps or me fluffing what I want to say as I can change camera and delete the bad bits at the same time! :)
You could maybe do that when recording, think of the words than use a camera angle change to hide the time gaps? :)
BTW, your written English is fantastic and you are using colloquialisms which show an awesome understanding of the language! :)

Thanks for the advice guys! And for the kind words HippoDrone . Somehow there's a German flag under my account name but I'm from Belgium. The northern part of Belgium (Flanders) which is the Dutch speaking part. We speak the same language our northern neighbours (The Netherlands) do. The south of Belgium is French speaking. I know, it's a little bit confusing. You can compare it to Canada where there's an English and a French part. I have no clue why this forum thinks I'm German o_O. lol. I don't think it would be useful to make a motovlog in Dutch. Somehow people in Belgium are not interested in motovlogs ... I think. Btw, there are no good Dutch motovlogs that I know of. Also to meet other people, probably Europeans, it's better to communicate in English. Contrary to the US of A we don't have one official language throughout Europe that everyone speaks. But in general everybody in Europe understand English, more or less. So I guess I just have to practise more. Maybe I should just talk to myself in English and record it for a while until I get used to it :p.

Make a couple in your native language to get the feeling of riding and speaking, its a skill you need to develop.

You don't have to release them, you just need to practice.

That's so true! It really is a skill that you need to practise. BTW, I had a look at your YT channel. Great stuff man!

I started to recently follow a few German motovloggers. They have closed captioning so I can some what follow what they are saying, though the translation isn’t that good. Regardless, I still watched their post. You could do the same, though it may be better if you create the subtitles yourself. I know it’s more work, but you could double your target audience.

Ahh my apologies @R9T not sure why the forum has applied the German flag to your profile. If you drop @Lurch a pm he may be able to shed some light on that! :)

YouTube has the ability to create your own closed captioning. I know it is time intensive but for a short motovlog, you could do it maybe. Record in one language and CC the other?

I watch some how to videos from on YouTube creator that is dead so they sign and speak but also have the onscreen interpretation.

A bonus is that according to VidIQ, having CC increases a video's SEO score.

On screen ouija board?

@R9T English is also not my first language, but I have only vlogged in English. I also suffer from lack of vocabulary at times, especially when I have to concentrate on riding at the same time. There are many things I could have said better, if I had time to think about it. However I always try to do several takes. And then select the best one, and just cut out the absolutely horrible bits. Talking about same subject several times in a row makes it sort of familiar subject and it will come out smoother and better at later takes.

It should have read, that is deaf. Autocorrect likes the more ominous words. I guess that is why I never heard back from some folks.

It all depends which target audience you are aiming for, or if your goal is to improve your English or not. From what I understand, speaking your native language gives you the authentic presence which is local to your area, and if you put English subs, then you probably have the best of both worlds, some people like to hear you speak a different language yet still understand you with the subtitles. If you prefer to improve your English then you can opt with the English route, though you may have less of your local viewers. Such is that I have, I prefer to use English and I can tell that my local views are not as high than those speaking in the native language, I am merely comparing in the local sense and not global, so again it's your call.

The forum assigns flags on where it thinks your IP is from. It’s the way the plugin works and sadly nothing we can do about incorrect IP data, or it’s a case of your provider bases its services with a server in another country.

Yeah. I noticed sometimes it shows the German flag and sometimes it shows the Belgian flag. Come to think of it, the German flag appears when I post something at work. Imwork for a German company (located in Belgium) and our servers are probably in Germany. Busted! Don’t mention it to my boss

From a non-english speaker.
It will improve.
But your voice always sounds weird to you, even when you record in your own voice.

For vlogging, take your time. If you can find a word or a sentence doesn't flow, redo your sentence.
The wonders of editing can make it smooth later. Don't be afraid to resay the same sentence (or similar) multiple times ;)
Listen to english vloggers or podcasts right before you jump on your bike helps in the beginning as well ;)

Just do it, is the main trick i guess.

Btw, there are no good Dutch motovlogs that I know of.

There are quite a lot of Dutch Motovloggers, and multiple good ones as well. (myself not included).
One of the biggest, if not the biggest of them all is speaking Dutch.
And yes, we do have some shitty ones as well, but that is no exception world wide ;)

although normally links to channels would be frowned on, feel free to put a handful of links up here of Dutch motovloggers you feel are noteworthy, we might all find some new stuff to add to our lists! :)

CDA441: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEce86gaE4JgL4bd4FZEVNQ
Not the most active one, but good content. Belgium as well.

DutchtheOne; https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYJYDbxzpo1FTHbW0w9vPRQ
One of the bigger ones. Drives through one of the more beautiful areas of Netherlands.
Uploads randomly aswell.

HellrishRider; https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8TUdkw87_kHswFgc4cq_TQ
Kinda the odd one out; Spanish Guy, living in Netherlands, talking in English.
Loves the metal and rock ;)

LithRides: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYANzr9JBJqW5F36RKlhe6w

Offroad vlogs/videos.

Sir Chickenstrips: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC23XDqCMHNkBKSC0ZOmicig
Random stuff and uploadscheme. Does rides through some nice scenery as well.

87Slabside: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUsTmjXShkZ7G07dBO7Kj7Q
I believe the biggest Dutch motovlog channel. Quite allot of reviews.
Fully Dutch spoken, but has video's without text.

TheNiekoss: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9kShFPCuq4BWtABPUn-QRQ
Also Random uploadscheme. But recently bought a offroad bike, so fun can happen.

TooLazytothinkofaUsername: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCM_aLlNgJ2KP_S34nV469AQ
Newer vlogger, getting used to it all.

There are more out there, think the list i have is maybe 3 times this one.
But these are the more active ones, or the ones that activly vlog. And not just record music style videos ;)
