Hey guys. Just a thought.

I am really new to this motovlogging scene but i watch other motovlogging channels just to get an idea of how to do this gig.

Some channels have a vast number of subscribers in my opinion which may have an impact in educating other bikers on safe riding.

Please do not get me wrong, as I am not telling anyone on how to run their channels or on how to ride, but I am just stating how crucial our role as motovloggers in promoting safe riding in terms of riding our bike and wearing appropriate apparels. At least a proper helmet, gloves, riding jacket or even proper riding boots, perhaps?

What do you guys think?

In the UK we have to wear a proper crash helmet. I think it is good to set an example, but it would put me off a channel if the narrator was telling me how to ride or what to wear. I watch YouTube for entertainment. So if you were able to get a responsible example across without preaching or lecturing then it can't be a bad thing.

Agreed... previously i didnt using appropriate apparels while riding, but i do change that attitude as you can see on my latest video... the way we riding it's hard to changed.. it depend on the rider itself..

I think I get the overall point of both of you. Fadz - don't set a bad example for others to follow. So basically no being a hooligan overtly.

Hippo - don't be preachy. So no lectures on what to do or not do.

I think both are good. Leading by action without rubbing the audience's face in it.

Sure street stunting gets views sometimes but I also recall a motovlogger sharing with me during filming a collaboration video how much skin gets rubed off on asphalt.

I have to admit, it made me think twice a few times since then. He was not preachy about it, so hopefully when he sees I have gone back to the half helmet for the hot and humid summer, he won't be disappointed.

I'm new to the motovlogging scene as well - but based on what I've seen a lot of MVs focus on producing entertaining videos over educational ones that advocate for safe riding technique. There are channels though that do focus on better riding / CEs/ etc. The most sensible approach it seems to take responsibility over your own skill level and progress at your comfort level - I wouldn't look for these videos for proper guidance. The same way I wouldn't look toward rap music to steer my moral compass. :p

Of course we can be a good/bad example, I´ve watched lots of vids of "Diary observations" where you can find good/bad tips for riding moto, car , or even as a pedestrian.

Most people watch YT for entertainment. If you want to promote safe riding style/gear/training then do it by example, otherwise you risk coming across as too preachy and risk losing subs/views. However, if you have a channel (or playlist) that is dedicated to safety/training, then by all means preach away - people know what you are about. One of my favorites in this category is MC Rider.

There are a few channels out there that do this. MC rider comes to mind.

I have myself done a few tips videos on various things. What you have to remember is everyone on the internet is a expert on all matters. They will be quick to shoot you down right or wrong.

You also have to remember that its not very exciting watching most of the time.

By all means make mention of using correct gear, but I wouldn't go as far as dedicating your channel to it unless you have proper training in the subject.

I agree with most of you guys.. i did not mean preaching as in Sunday Mass preaching since most of the times it is kind of boring, but what i meant was maybe having a shot in the video of us wearing our riding gear or sharing some of our scars due to accidents we involved in.

Maybe perhaps something like that?

It’s a good idea as I’m a big promoter of safety and riding tactics. In my last vlog post I talk about being rusty in your riding skills if you are getting back in the saddle after the winter break. However, I think such a channel could quickly become one dimensional as there’s more to discover when we ride - people, places, experiences, both the good and the bad.

Post riding and safety tips when you can, but be open to what’s just down the road.

I think a strong vertical approach is important these days as the genre is so crowded. My channel is gear to people ages 50 and up. Trying to find an under-served market I think is a good idea.

I find that there are a lot of popular channels that attract a younger audience. I think it's key to promote safety because they're leading by example. That's not to say for them to be like "you don't wear your gear, you die!!!!!!!!", but I appreciate the disclaimers of "I don't have my gear on, this is dumb, I'm going to my neighbors down the street".

I tend not to try to represent anyone or any community, I ride my way and give advise based on my own thoughts, experience and opinion. I am definitely not a role model nor do I want to be one.

Why? Mainly because I don't want to be a hypocrite. Yes, my tag line is "Ride safe (and) safe ride", but I do not preach it, I sometimes will ride fast or not really follow the law, of course I try not to ride dangerously as I treasure my life, so, how I am suppose to be an example or preach to people to obey the law, don't speed, etc etc etc when I do not do it all the time myself?

I just try to be a decent rider, have fun now and then, some people may hate me but I honestly could not give a flying fart.

I think having a channel on good riding techniques and tactics doesn't have to be directly about safety. But one can connect to the other. Good videos on counter-steering, riding in the rain, at night, on groove pavement, SMIDSY maneuvers and chasing the vanishing point can make bad riders better (and hopefully) safer. I think there are only so many of theses videos one can make, so make a channel both broad and deep with a variety of subjects.

Yes, I agree. I have even thought about making a video discussing this topic but I'm not prepared for the wave of butt-hurt I know it will bring lol. We, as motovloggers and people who present ourselves to the public as motorcyclists, should absolutely feel responsible for new riders. It really bothers me seeing a channel where the person has maybe 1 month riding experience but rides like an ass and tries to be like the other bigger vloggers (I'm not naming any names). Whether we know it or not, we are leaders and there are people looking up to us. It's our responsibility to set a positive example, save the stunts and high speeds for the track.

Good points. I think we can just do by showing what we do in our vids and just avoid being critical of the bad/squid riders out there. There will always be their kind with their own channels showing gross stupidity. I’ve clicked away from a number of vloggers who do that, and Yanninoob is still paying the price for his conduct - medically, and as far as I know he’s still not riding.

My Channel is new but exactly about that, sharing how I’ve survived 35 years of biking. I commentate on what I’m looking out for, road positioning, braking, and just bike chat too. Advert free too. I’m not after making money I’m just sharing my love of staying alive on the bike

I can't tell you how much footage I have at home from rides this last year where I "expound upon" the habits of the more popular channels' riders or what they show. And then, the realization hit when I asked myself if I wanted to watch what I was about to post.

As others have already said, we go to youtube to be entertained, first. We also learn from it, but it is multimedia consumption at the bare bones.

When I watch some of the compilations I use them as a game - "Spot the Idiot." And in a lot of the videos, it's the rider who's the idiot. We arent going to change people or how they drive/ride/walk. Use everything as a learning experience.

I have a goal this year to get something motocentric up every couple weeks, every week if possible, that I am able to ride. Some is just going to be riding along, some will be a compilation of WFT moments (like my latest one of a swerving, texting cyclist and a stop-sign running cager - both within seconds of each other). I do not plan on preaching or expounding on the stupid shit that goes on in the different channels. No point.

MC Rider and DanDanTheFireman both have great safety tips for motorcycling. I've shared a few tips on my channel that have kept me safe, but I am not as seasoned in riding, so I don't know if I qualify to give much advice.
