As it says on the tin, does anyone know or have any opinions on replacing textiles?

I know helmets should be replaced every 5 years.

However whats peoples opinion on textiles, is there a point when they become ineffective?

Cheers!

Well, visible wear really.

Or fading colour, waterproof quality failing (try nikwax wash and proof first).

Armour is replaceable if it even has a shelf life.

Or, replace it when you fancy a change, flog the old stuff on local Facebook or eBay

aye, my Rukka kit will only get replaced when I can no longer get into it, nikwax is great.... even used it on a pair of jeans before heading off to Europe on my V7! :)

I'm one of those that keeps stuff till its really DONE, this would involve rips that can no longer be patched or sewn. Maintaining size is kind of critical though ;)

Actually, even helmets don't need to be replaced every 5 years. That's just manufacturer guarantee. As long as it doesn't take a beating, you can continue using it for quite a long time beyond 5 years.

Textile wear? Could use it practically forever as long as you fit into it, and isn't chewed through by age and the elements.

I think the recommendation for helmets is because the plastics can degrade over time, and that's basically invisible. Maybe certain constructions can last longer than others, but it's going to be down to you far you want to take it. It'll also be down to the amount you use it as well.

Other thing with helmets is fit. The EPS can compress over time, and you should always think about how well it's still fitting as the above everything guide for a helmet is that it must be a good fit, poor fit,
Poor protection. The well fitting budget helmet is going to do more for you than an ill fitting expensive Schuberth.

As with anything, there's no hard and fast rule, use your common sense, if you're a 365 rider then you're more likely to need to renew gear in general sooner than the weekend summer rider.

Cheers all!

My textiles the stuff I wear every day for work is beginning to get battered its nearly 4 years old with prob 35k wear and one bad crash, heavy rain = leaks, but hey i'm mostly dry, and I can live with a bit of dampness, just wondering if the material degrades at all over time. Basically I'm struggling to justify new gear which I want but from what everyone saying it should last a bit longer...

Basically replace when something doesnt work anymore thats crucial.

I replaced my previous jacket because the front zipper broke and I could just not fix it.
