2015 New Mics?????

I've experimented with different mics over the past year. I found that AudioTechnica worked best ( yes even with long ass 30ft line). I wondered if some new products are on the market? Would love to hear your thoughts?

So what mics are you guys using? Anything new?

The mics are far less important that how you mount them inside your helmet and the hardware you use to capture the audio.

For lapel mics the differences are so minute as it's such a simple device, while swapping from a GoPro to a Zoom H2N makes the world of difference in audio quality with the same mic.

There is a pretty nice size market for a manf to come in with a "motovlog" mic with good wind blocking and generic install instructions since its a very common topic.

Totally agreed. A little manufacturer expertise and development might make all of our lives a whole lot easier! Still, they'd probably charge so much for the 'Perfect Motovloggers Mic' that we'd all just keep on fudging our own solutions!! :D I mea, look how much drift charge for their mics, which are complete toilet and wildly mis-specced for the job in hand!

I use a drift mic actually, and it's no better than my 50p lapel mic :p

It is a lot tougher though so I don't change it as much when I tug on the cable and break the thing.

I have to agree that the quality is pretty good. Nice thick cable (that's what she said). But I just found it WAY too sensitive! Distortion all over the show. The best mic I ever had was a Speedlink SPES7, but it broke and I had to solder it back together! I lost so much footage that I now don't trust it anymore! But still, it cost £6!

I use my Sena20s and have been very happy with its performance. Others may disagree. I bought it so I could take calls and listen to music but doubling as a mic for the motovlogging is great as well.

Is it easy to configure for recording?

I've used two lapel mics. I am using the Sony ECMCS3 right now. It's okay. I also have the Audio Technica one that many motovloggers use. I can't stand the wire and the battery- even if it is a bit better than the Sony.

I am definitely on the lookout for a better lapel mic.

Easy is an understatement. What makes it easy though is the Sena backpack which is another $99. The Sena backpack operates on its own battery power so it doesn't affect your go pro battery. That being said...I don't have my go pro in a fully enclosed case. There's a plastic surround that comes with the backpack that will fit around the top and sides of the go pro but not the front and back.

Here's what the camera and backpack look like together along with the surround. There's another piece not in this shot which is a plastic bar with a mini USB plug on each end which is how the Sena communicates with the go pro.

Bro, you should do a VLOG about your VLOG setup :) ( serious)

@swiss would love to hear more about the H2N and how employ its use for motovlogs. I used the H1N for a bit then decided it wasn't worth the effort. Is the H2N that much more superior?

I have the GP-10 and the only downside is that the backpack makes it impossible to use the normal case and the case that comes with the GP-10 is not waterproof or cover the lens at all, which scares me. I went ahead and bought the waterproof case which is a little wider and deeper than the normal case. But it is worth the money to protect the Hero.

I was just going to ask is anybody rocking the Sena GP10. :) And did you also buy the wp housing? I'd like to hear a review too! I've watched a couple (not too many motovlogs available on this) reviews on youtube and they were ok. But not too informative really.

Have not bought a housing yet but probably will soon.

I've just gone back to the Audio Technica mic. The Sony wasn't cutting it. Too much wind noise.

The AT mic is noticeably better, so I'll have to deal with the on/off switch and the long wire.

I have the housing for the GP-10 and I wouldn't use it on my bike without it. I posted a picture of it a few comments back. It is a little bit bigger but for the protection it's worth it.
