Handling Trolls

Once you have a YouTube channel its kind of guaranteed that you will have to handle trolls at some point of time. What's your way of dealing with it?

This was my first such instance and I had a good laugh by the end! Here is the screenshot.

There is a setting on YouTube where the comments are held. I believe it reads something like "post only approved comments". I use it and when someone comments, you get a notification. If you approve the comment, then it posts for everyone else to read.

I have enabled that for spam comments asking for subs and what not. But I think it works only for new comments and not a comment for existing comment. Anyways, I can still report this user and have the comments removed but then where is the fun in that?

I guess it depends on the definition of fun. I ride to find inner peace and post to share that with kindred spirits. Since a I cannot savagely beat down a keyboard Rambo in person, I would rather use behavioral psychology method of extinction. The miscreant wants attention but will find only silence as their comment is deleted and forgotten.

The last one I had said that if I subscribed to his/her channel they could guarantee me 1000s of views and 100s of new subscribers. Which means either they have a massive friends database who believe anything they tell them. Or they have spent months creating loads of google accounts under different names.

I was tempted to subscribe to them but without warning I banged my head on the kitchen cupboard and I suddenly saw sense.

I understand your point, but silently deleting the comment might give them a false satisfaction that they won and it was deleted because there was no comeback. I didnt want this person to have that. He/she was clearly frustrated that I wasnt frustrated

Sometimes regular people dont make sense, how can you expect that from trolls?

Those are spam comments, I had several till date. They search for words like first vlog, first ride etc and post their standard comment asking for subs. Youtube always warned me that it might be spam and it indeed was. Sometimes the channel seems legitimate but I guess people fall for their comment and sub to them. Its useless having such subs really when they dont add any views.

Usually I will just ignore the post, sometimes some other users will instead reply to that troll's comment and then a comment war starts between them without my involvement.. I have no thought of trying to be middle man or delete/stop it, quite pointless.

Yours is quite a big channel, I am sure you will have hundreds of such comments by now. So you cant feed them anyways

Nah it's not big.. But I don't encounter that many trolls honestly, I don't know why. I'm not complaining though.

Don't worry about it, I have a buddy that purposely dislikes every video for the sake of keeping balance in the Force.

Just don't respond to their Trolling post. They crave attention, don't give them anyway. Ignore their one liners.

Plus, if it were possible to get a number representing the average age of ALL YouTube users, it would probably be about 16 !?
Just kids, whose buzz and sense of humor obviously falls short of us adults!

In this case CodeNameAB you DID fall for the troll. Yes, you tried to outwit him/her. But by responding EVERY time, you satisfied the individuals requirement to receive attention (of whatever kind). Next time just skip past their post and pretend they are invisible.

Also notice, reading through the screenshot, half way through he/she/it tries reversing the situation by making out you are trolling them? Reverse psychology at its lamest.

I know the best option is to delete and move on and thats what I do for pointless hate/rage/racist comments but here there was an opportunity to have some fun with the troll so I didnt mind replying. And its not often that I get trolls so I wanted to see where it goes, hence I also didnt mind feeding his/her hunger as long as they get trolled themselves Moreover, they get satisfied only when you reply in the exact same way they were expecting you to, with some anger and frustration, not when you reply calmly and politely. You can see how pissed he/she was by that fact.


And its a case of lack of comebacks & repeating what I said, no reverse psychology involved there, you think too much

I quite enjoy my troll comments but i usually fire back some sarcastic comment anyway just for shits and giggles. Going to sea i learned pretty quickly that you need a very witty comeback when you get insulted and you need to do it quickly so i sharpened my tools there and youtube isn't really a bother when it comes to it.

On the bright side, troll comments are still comments and they bring more eyes to your videos.
