External Hard Drive

So i've been recording a decent amount, and my space on my computer seems to be dwindling down as of recently. So my question is what are some really affordable, good external hard drives for moto vlogs. I dont need a ton of space but I think 500gb or 1 tb should last? So anyone have any good external hard drives they think will do the trick, has to be able to read and write fast and support HD videos, maybe even 4k cause who knows if i will eventually get into that. But let me know what you think! Thanks!

Standards have changed so much within the past few years and it also really depends on what kind of computer you have :o . FireWire 800 was once the gold standard... but now there's USB 3.0, Thunderbolt, etc. If your computer has an additional internal HDD bay, then that's on option if your bus speed is fact enough :o (SATA, etc.). Then to top it all off with a Cherry :D - instead of using a standard 7200rpm HDD, go for a solid state drive... they blow everything out of the water @o@ ! My favorite is the SanDisk Extreme Pro SDD... but this is a top-of-the-line SSD (and pricey - most SDDs still are nowadays but have been coming down in price recently :o ~) and if your bus or transfer speed is muted, then it's kind'a a waste :/ . A good second is the SanDisk Ultra II - almost just as good ;) . Also be aware that a SSD is nearly the same dimensions as a standard laptop HDD (2.5"; as apposed to a standard, full full sized 3.5" HDD) and you'll need an adapter probably - like the following:

...the cleavage here is that a number of computers have HDD temperature sensors... so if you just paste the HDD into the machine instead of using an adapter, then your computer's fans might go haywire :o ~......

So in summery, it just depends on what kind of setup you have, what you're aiming for and what you're able to do ;) . Hope this helps a little ^_^ !~.....

Thanks for the very detailed fast reply! I have a Macbook Pro that I use for everything, it is the mid-2014 retina laptop. I know its not made for editing and what not, but its my university computer and its all I got ;) It has 8gb memory and a 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5 processor. I believe it has a thunderbolt 2 and USP 3.0 ports. So I think a SSD is the option I am going for. I think 1tb is going to be the number im going to work with as well.

SSD will be the go if you want to speed up file transfer, but can be expensive. You can fill 500gb pretty quick especially if you are going to look at doing 4k footage. You can get a 1tb harddrive for a good price so definetly look at that size.

Well, it's just not file transfer, but rendering, too ;o . Of course, file transfer, some rendering, etc., will also be limited by the system's HDD, processor speed, RAM amount, etc. ;) ~.....

If it's storage of archived footage, ie you mive old stuff off your internal "work" drive then speed won't be an issue. Find a named brand drive and off you go.

Maybe a NAS? Then you can stream media at home.

I use a 5tb external to save files once I'm done editing/publishing

My SSD shit the bed (yes this can happen even to non moving media) so I'm back on a spinner HD for now, its noticeably slower

I'm using a 2TB Samsung D3 for my unedited videos at the moment.

USB3.0, so reasonably quick for copying, and I can still render in real-time when using it as the source.

Was looking on Amazon and went to BestBuy and it looks like amazon has the deals, same stuff for cheaper price with free shipping. So amazon i think will be the place i get it from. Ive been seeing great reviews on the WD My Passport 1tb drive, anyone have any positives or negatives for this SSD??
Thanks!!

Just my thought on WD - I've had bad experiences with them in the distant past :o . Seems like they like to make their stuff cheap... it may be why their stuff IS so cheap >_>; . Things may have changed since then, though ;p ~...

Just out of curiosity, have you checked how much it would cost to buy a standalone SDD & a standalone external enclosure 'n put he two together :o ??? Sometimes it works out cheaper that way - just a thought ;) ~.....

Good man ;D heh~

put a SSD in your PC to speed up things
and get an external HD (I got 3TB) for all your published stuff

Backup is really importent IMO

Quickie about NAS, can you set permissions so certain areas are only accessible by password, or by certain computers/logins?

Lurch, it will depend on the NAS and the software that is on it. But in most cases in short, the answer is YES.
For the record, I have a QNAP TS-451. I can answer any questions about that NAS in detail if you'd like.
